Media Monitoring

A selection of Afghan media is monitored on a daily base in order to provide information to the MC regarding whether candidates gained fair access to the media, whether and to what extent candidates utilized their sponsored advertising programme, and whether the monitored media abided by the legal provisions ruling the mass media during the election campaign.

The employed methodology, based on international standards, counts the amount of time dedicated to the actual broadcast of candidates on TV and radio as well as when they are mentioned or quoted by someone else, both in information programmes and non-news broadcasts. The amount of time is then evaluated to determine if candidates are presented in positive, neutral or negative contexts.
